Santiago Martinez - When I was 9 years old, I was watching my dad work on a
carving. He told me that my family was very talented and that I should try
working on a piece to see if I was any good at it. So I gave it a try and he was
right, I was pretty good. My dad has taught me everything he knows about carving
and has guided me through the process of exploring my talent. He has shown me
how to present my talent by giving me a piece of wood and asking me what I see
in the piece. After I have thought about it, he gives me the piece (and the
tools) to carve what my imagination has
envisioned. When it gets hard or a little confusing he is always there to help.
The carvings are so unique that no two pieces are ever the same. Some of the
carvings are so special to me that I won't sell or even give them away. I enjoy
carving the wood to make wonderful sculptures. Sometimes, it's hard to believe
that I did that piece of art. I like carving on my spare time and believe that
this will be a life long hobby. My mom and dad tell me that I'm very lucky to
have such a wonderful talent. It's true and I hear it a lot at art shows. I am
blessed with a lot of talent and love! I am thankful to God, Christ and the
Angels above for giving me the inspiration to make beautiful carvings. I am also
thankful for my dad's encouragement and support. Without him I wouldn't have
ever started carving.
